Top 6 Tips For Navigating Your Child’s Sleep While Traveling

Hey, Mama! Yasmin from Mindful Sleep here. Fun Fact: I’m also a flight attendant! I have spent 15 years flying the friendly skies and I was able to pick up a few tips and tricks during this time. In this blog, I am sharing my top recommendations that will help you keep sleep on track while away from home!

SNOOZIN WHILE THE PLANE IS CRUISIN

NAPTIME

The best time to fly is during naptime. Choose a flight that takes off shortly before their normal nap time, this way the engines can lull them to sleep.

Mom Hack: Place a drop of lavender essential oil on your little one’s shirt to help encourage relaxation and sleep!

WINDOW SEAT PLEASE!

BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE…I MEAN AIRPLANE

To better help your little one catch some zzz’s, book a window seat. This will prevent getting bumped by carts or being disturbed by seat mates that need to get up. In addition, book a row away from lavatories and galleys as those tend to be the noisiest areas. A seat near an engine can be helpful! The engine will act as white noise machine and help your little one sleep better.

BONUS TIP: Be sure to nurse/give a bottle during take off & landing to help relieve the pressure in their ears!

SLEEP SACKS, BLANKIES & LOVIES OH MY!

DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT THESE!

If they sleep with it at home, BRING IT! Anything that smells familiar and reminds them of their home sleeping environment will help them to get to sleep in their new surroundings.

BRING ON THE NOISE!

THE WHITE NOISE THAT IS!

Grab yourself a travel white noise machine or download a white noise app to your phone! This will be very useful for once you get to your finally destination!

The Yogasleep GO Travel SoundMachine has a 12 hour battery life, multiple sounds to choose from and is super compact, making it great for travel!

RECREATE THE NURSERY

KEEP IT PITCH BLACK.

  • Slumberpod: This thing is amazing! It fits over a pack n play, mini crib or toddler mattress and helps recreate that pitch black environment! Use code MINDFULSLEEP20 to get $20 off.

  • Another alternative? Tin foil and painters tape over the window. Not pretty, but does the trick!

STICK TO IT!

KEEP SCHEDULES + ROUTINES CONSISTENT

It may be tempting to just wing it when it comes to sleep while traveling. Doing so could lead to a cranky, over tired baby and a resurgence of sleep problems that you have worked so hard to eliminate.

A well rested baby = a happy baby!
